BA, Painting and Art History, Connecticut College, New London, CT
MFA Painting & MS Art History, TCHADA Museum Studies -Materials, Techniques & Conservation, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn NY Maggie Simonelli, Manhattan based artist, continues the conversation on nature, color and transformation in her new series Cosmic Fire with her signature encaustic “burn in” technique. Simonelli’s artwork embraces the feminine, highly decorative style, and handmade sensuality of touch in the rich and beautiful materiality of her paintings that speaks of love, mythology, nature, and beauty. Using ceramic tools and X-acto knives, Simonelli carves out arabesque shapes and lines interlacing 24 kt gold &16 kt pale gold leaf, oxidized copper and silver within the layers of colored beeswax creating a shimmering opalescent effect. Her unique use of color and materials are infused with symbolism from her research in historic pigments, nature, and beauty products. Rich jewel tones from semiprecious stones of lapis lazuli, cinnabar, Arabian malachite, are combined with materials from nature and cosmetics, crushed pearls, indigo, seawater, eye shadows and lipstick to create a lush surface. Simonelli draws the viewer into a story in her abstract paintings that speaks to the essence of our being, our nature as humans and love, both sacred and romantic. Simonelli continues on Themes of Love & Nature in her series Gifts of Venus, Vera Conversazione d’Amore, Magic Square, Indigo & Gold and Wind + Grasses to invoke the nature of love through her own created romantic mythology.
