Maggie Simonelli explores themes of nature, feminine beauty, and love primarily through material and process. Her signature encaustic βburn-inβ technique begins with a mixture of beeswax and pigments which are βslow-cookedβ in a double boiler. For this series, her materials include pearl dust, crushed oyster shells, coral, and a range of blue pigments β many from womenβs cosmetics β as well as 22 kt gold, copper, and silver metal leaf. As Simonelli ads layer upon layer of satin translucent wax-based βpaintβ, she carves arabesque shapes and lines into the gold and metal leaf. A quote from Rumi inspired the series title:
βLove isnβt the work of the tender and the gentle;
Love is the work of wrestlers.
The one who becomes a servant of lovers
is really a fortunate sovereign.
Donβt ask anyone about Love; ask Love about Love.
Love is a cloud that scatters pearls.β ~ Rumi

#Manhattanbased #artist @maggiesimonelli #MaggieSimonelliβs #encausticpaintings have been a mainstay @GaryMarottaFineArt #provincetown since 2011β her current exhibition, βCosmic Fire,β remains on view thru Oct. 31. Her current works combine #minerals, #pigments, #metalleaf and even #makeup to symbolize transformation through destruction and regeneration. βChoosing the materials to represent this subject, I had to direct myself towards western art history,β Simonelli said. βI imagined the heart of the flame, choosing 24 kt. gold and cinnabar, cochineal and the most beautiful reds became the βelementsβ that could describe fire as both material and intellect. The physical beauty of the heart of the fire represented by the red crackling in the flame by the #gold.β (Seen here: Fire, Red #6, 2020 #encaustic, 24 kt. gold leaf, 16 kt. pale gold leaf, oxidizing copper & aluminum leaf, lipstick, cochineal, cinnabar & pigments on wood, 20β x 20β) #provincetownma #ptown #capecod #artistsoninstagram
